ʔaqnamuknana
Wycliffe Butte
In the land of
Little Cliffs
The Ktunaxa word ʔaqnamuknana describes the two buttes, Little Cliffs that lie within Wycliffe. It is a significant place for the Ktunaxa because of the twin cliffs. Hunting expeditions took place in this area because the game could be driven in the valley between the two buttes making it easier to overcome.
Today many people enjoy the short walk up the butte, in all four seasons, to take in spectacular views of both the Rockies and the Purcell mountain ranges. A visit in mid-May to June is rewarded with a riot of colour when the Arrowleaf Balsam Root flowers are in full bloom.
