Paint made from red clay
Namita qakxaǂ ʔitkniǂni ʔaknusmi, "Paint made from red clay", is a significant natural feature located in Kootenay National Park. This site is not only a fascinating geological phenomenon but also a place steeped in practical historical use.
It is reported that the Ktunaxa people historically collected iron oxide from the spring deposits at this site. The iron oxide was used as pigments, which played a crucial role in their cultural practices. These natural deposits provided the Ktunaxa with materials for creating vibrant reds, used in art and possibly for other traditional purposes.
