The Spirit Trail

The Spirit Trail, also known as the Fairmont Trail and the Plains of Nativity, is a historic transportation route that runs along the shores of ya·kiⱡʔuniⱡiⱡki kwiⱡqⱡi (Columbia Lake). This trail was historically used by both First Nations and early European explorers as a vital travel route along the length of Columbia Lake. For the Indigenous peoples, the Spirit Trail was a favoured route leading eastward beyond Canal Flats to destinations like Whiteswan Lake and into Kananaskis country. Today, visitors can hike the Spirit Trail to experience a path steeped in deep cultural significance and scenic beauty, tracing the footsteps of those who traversed this route long ago.
